Does one have to do Asynchronous queries with XBAP application?

No, as XBAP is just WPF for the browser, you can utilize the desktop IdeaBlade framework, that supports synchronous queries.

I haven't tried using IdeaBlade in an XBAP, not sure if you will run into any trust issues.
