Is it possible (or is there at least something planned) for DevForce that a Client is able to receive push notifications from a server without having to open a port on the client first?

If you use TCP instead of HTTP, you won't need to open a port on the client.
In the DRC (at http://drc.ideablade.com/xwiki/bin/view/Documentation/code-sample-push-notification#HDefaultconfiguration) you will find information about cofiguring using TCP.
