Hi Thomas,
 
If you use TCP instead of HTTP, you won't need to open a port on the client.
In the DRC (at http://drc.ideablade.com/xwiki/bin/view/Documentation/code-sample-push-notification#HDefaultconfiguration) you will find information about cofiguring using TCP.
