Just installed DevForceSilverlight.6.0.1 on my Windows 2008 Server Dev environment....
 
Installation went OK but then GettingStarted.exe launched and an error appeared:

I attached a debugger, and the exception details are:
 
System.ArgumentNullException was unhandled

Not a great start to my evaluation process!

I have seen this problem with one other prospect.  In his case, the problem had to do with his Internet Explrer settings.  We worked around the problem by double-clicking on the LearningResources.htm file in the Learning Resources folder.  Try this workaround and tell is if it works.

I hate to resurrect a thread, but I am having the EXACT problem described above.

In fact, I even attached a debugger and got the same results... Even more interesting, when uninstalling a null reference is thrown as well (although the uninstall proceeds normally after dismissing the dialog).

I've been all over your forums, Google, and of course the documentation that comes with the product and I'm not finding an answer.

I've watched video after video of how incredible your software appears to be, but so far I can't get it installed.

Any ideas?

Windows 7 RTM (7600)
VS 2010 Ultimate RTM
SQL 2008 Express

verified all of the prereqs are installed...

Anyone?

I've now tried installing this on three machines.

One Windows 7, the other two Windows Vista w/SP2

All have the pre-reqs as described in the install document packaged in the .zip

Null reference when trying to execute GettingStarted.exe and none of the documentation works - that is, you open the main documentation page and clicking any link results in a 404.

Uninstalling results in null reference error but then completes the uninstall.

Ideas?

Have you tried using the workaround of double-clicking on the LearningResources.htm file in the Learning Resources folder?

FYI - this was from the start menu, as the only folders created at install are Documentation and TemplateBackups.

Other ideas?

Double-clicking the htm file is just a workaround for your problem, and is not intended to be a "solution".
 
We have recently opened a bug report for problems running GettingStarted as a non-admin user.  We are also going to open a defect for the problem you are seeing.

The Learning Resources aren't installed to the main DevForce installation folder.  On Windows 7, if you installed for all users then the path would probably be "C:\Users\Public\Documents\DevForce 2010\Learning Resources".  If you installed only for yourself, then the folder would be under your documents folder. 
 
Within the Learning Resource folder you'll see LearningResources.htm, which you can open directly in your internet browser.  If you don't want to use the html pages to navigate the resources you can instead poke around in the subfolders.
 
Is it the links from the LearningResources.htm page that are giving you the 404 errors, or somewhere else?
 
Also, did you install DevForce with an admin account but are using another non-admin account for development?

Yes, I install as admin - in fact, on the windows 7 machine I run as the admin all the time just because I'm always having to change configurations.

I just did the install again and yes the document is there, it is the same document that is added to the start menu.

I can open that document (double clicking it) but ALL links on the page result in:

Firefox can't find the file at /C:/Users/Public/Documents/DevForce 2010/Learning Resources/_LRUI/LearningPathways.htm.

FYI, Internet Explorer reports the same error message.

Sorry if I'm being a pain, but so far the only machine this package (we are evaluating it for a military project) has installed on successfully is Windows XP. In that case, it worked flawlessly...

Ideas?

Sorry for all the questions, but we haven't seen this problem before and are having a difficult time understanding what could be causing it.
 
Does the "C:/Users/Public/Documents/DevForce 2010/Learning Resources" folder contain a sub-folder named "_LRUI"?
 
Are there other sub-folders here, such as "010_IntroToDevForce", all the way to "120_Troubleshooting"?  If so, and it's just the html pages that are causing the problem, these folders contain all the samples, tutorials, and "Dev guide" chapters.   The html pages provide a handy browsing experience - when working! - but aren't essential.   If these folders were installed, give one of the samples or tutorials and try and see if it works OK for you.

The only folder in the Learning Resources folder is the folder called SplashPageFiles and it contains 3 jpg files.

The remaining contents for the Learning Resources folder are:

LearningResources.htm
LrSelfExtractor.exe
SplashPageUniversal.htm

Nothing else...

In Program Files\DevForce2010 it looks like the binaries, templates, VS addin, PDF's and .chm documentation.

I don't have any sample applications anywhere  :(

Hmm, not sure why the Learning Resources folder would be created yet not populated.  You can run the LrSelfExtractor.exe, which - if it's working - will unzip all LR content.  If the exe doesn't work, let us know what error you get.

LrSelfExtractor.exe when executed manually after the install does extract all of the expected material.

I'll continue evaluating and post here if anything else appears to be broken.
