Is it possible to use the Summary Detail View but not use the tab section as detailed information use it as its own entity?
 
For example I want to add/edit/delete using the Summary section and show all items in a grid in the detailed section.
 
Or do I have to create my own page view?

You should be able to do that.  Just add a grid view control for the detail section (same entity) and add that to the tab control.

Grid is coming back empty.

Make sure you add some columns.
